RUBBERBAND – Reckless Underdog

Reckless Underdog marks the 20th anniversary of RUBBERBAND. This three-part evening combines elements of ballet, hip-hop culture and contemporary dance, three styles that have marked the choreographer’s practice. Limitless horizons.

Equally fascinated by the creative richness of urban dance and the subtleties of the classical and contemporary languages, Victor Quijada embarked on a radically new path two decades ago by blurring the boundaries between these very different disciplines. With Reckless Underdog, he offers a projection of his work in space and time. Three facets of a plural vision reflect and complement each other, each with its own stage design, energy and musical contributors, all from the Montreal avant-garde: Chilly Gonzales, Kid Koala and Vlooper of Alaclair Ensemble, alongside long-time creative associate Jasper Gahunia. The components of the work unite to guide us through the remnants of memories and to morph into future visions of themselves. A fragmented universe in which the choreographer, a reckless and visionary outsider, leaps boldly into the future.

Since 2002, Victor Quijada and RUBBERBAND have not only redefined break dance codes within an institutional context and enlivened the Quebec dance scene, but have opened the way for new creators fascinated by this dance form. Armed with a technique he conceived for dancers, the RUBBERBAND Method – an electrifying vocabulary combining the energy of Hip Hop, the refinement of classical ballet, and the angular quality of contemporary dance – and some 40 creations and collaborations in Canada and abroad behind him, Victor Quijada has always continued to evolve and innovate throughout his prolific career.
