Opéra de Montréal presents

Il Trovatore – Verdi

Can we run away from the consequences of our actions, or will they haunt us for all eternity? Oscillating between fantasy and reality in a play of shadow and light, this new production of Il Trovatore featuring a stunning cast proves that revenge comes at a heavy price.

Manrico is a young troubadour hopelessly in love with the beautiful Leonora, whose heart he has captured despite the mounting jealousy of the Count di Luna, also enamoured of her. But a far more pernicious fate antagonizes the two men: they are unaware of the brotherly tie that binds them. Azucena, keeper of this family secret, plans to use it to avenge her mother’s death.

Verdi –  Il trovatore (1853), along with Rigoletto (1851) and La traviata (1853), are often considered to be Verdi’s three great masterpieces. The “popular trilogy”, often feature chaste, courageous heroines who are condemned to unhappiness, either by society or the powers that be. These works made him the most popular opera composer in Italy.
