Festival Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal

Since its founding in 1971 by Dimitri Eipidès and Claude Chamberlan, the Festival du nouveau cinéma has brought the latest and greatest in film, video and noteworthy television to Montreal audiences. An annual fall feast for film lovers, the FNC brings together new works by some of the world’s most celebrated cinema artists alongside new films from Canada and Quebec.

A high point of the program, the Festival du nouveau cinéma presents a series of awards including the Louve d’Or prize, awarded to the best film of the year. Past winners include Claire Denis’ Beau Travail, Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann and Aquí y Allá by Mexican director Antonio Méndez Esparza. As of the 2019 edition, the International Critics Prize – as selected by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) – will also be presented to the best first feature screened at the FNC, a prestigious prize also awarded at the Venice, Berlin, Cannes and Toronto film festivals.

More than just a series of screenings, the FNC also presents the four day FNC Forum, an industry networking and educational event aimed at young filmmakers and creators, as well as FNC Explore, spotlighting new technologies and innovations from immersive artworks to VR experiences.

The 2019 edition will spotlight exciting new releases like Varda par Agnès by Agnès Varda (France), Sorry We Missed You by Ken Loach (United Kingdom), Douleur et gloire by Pedro Almodovar (Spain) and the festival’s opening film Guest of Honour by Atom Egoyan (Canada), as well as new films from fellow Canadian filmmakers including Sophie Deraspe, Bédard Marcotte and André Forcier.
