Orchestre Métropolitain presents

Berlioz in Italy

Dancing, festive and expansive, the Italy that so impressed Berlioz, the 150th anniversary of whose death we mark in 2019, finds its spirit echoed in the scintillating Le Carnaval romain overture. Inspired by one of Lord Byron’s poems, Harold en Italie features a melancholy dreamer, here voiced by the viola of young, world-renowned soloist Marina Thibeault. In her Poem for Orchestra, Italian-born Montrealer Violet Archer alternates passages of great brilliance with moments of introspection. Composed before the famous Pines of Rome, Respighi’s symphonic poem Fountains of Rome displays the full palette of colours the composer is known for to depict famous fountains of the eternal city. A concert of works with an Italian connection conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
