Joyce El-Khoury – November 1, 2018, Pollack Hall LiveEvents October 25, 2018 3105 L’Opéra de Montréal and the Arab World Festival of Montreal present JOYCE EL-KHOURY Piano: Laurent Philippe In partnership with the Opéra de Montréal, the FMA (Festival du Monde Arabe de Montréal) presents an outstanding event with one of the most sought-after sopranos in the world of opera, Joyce El-Khoury, delivering an original repertory blending operatic singing and Middle Eastern music. Born in Lebanon and settling in Canada as a child, Joyce El-Khoury has been to the great music schools of America and to the world’s most prestigious opera houses, offering the most demanding of lyrical flights with a Mediterranean temperament accentuated by the scents of her native Levant. Joyce El-Khoury, credited with miraculous attributes by critics and opera buffs, has been nominated at the International Opera Awards and is experiencing a meteoric rise that already puts her among the greats. Accompanied by her faithful collaborator, the eminent pianist Laurent Philippe, she is a vocal painting portending a tragic chiaroscuro, with European lyric art and Middle Eastern music mutually conveying their synthesized cultural impulses. More than a century of musical history will be covered, from Ravel’s Scheherazade to Bizet’s Carmen, from Béchara El Khoury to Fauré, featuring an Orient that is dreamed about and imagined elsewhere.
