The Nutcracker

A Classic to Enjoy with the Whole Family
Does anything capture the holiday spirit better than this most exquisite of ballets? Year after year, coming together at Place des Arts for The Nutcracker is a Montreal tradition. Based on a story by Hoffmann and choreographed by Fernand Nault to music by Tchaikovsky, it is an outstanding show for the entire family, a classic that audiences across all generations can delight in discovering, or rediscovering, together.

Follow in the footsteps of Clara, Fritz and a flock of children and visit the Land of Snow, explore the Kingdom of Sweets and meet the King of Sweets, the Sugar Plum Fairy and a wide assortment of other colourful characters. With comical scenes, sparkling pas de deux, exhilarating music and elegant festivities, this fantasy world comes but once a year. Enjoy a taste of Christmas magic that never fails to delight!

I think the success of The Nutcracker is due to a combination of things: the
children’s charm, a feeling of nostalgia for a more peaceful time, the innocence of young Clara, and finally the marvellous classical dancing set to the famous Tchaikovsky score.
– Fernand Nault, Choreographer

The Nutcracker’s story time
One hour before each performance, actor Jacques Piperni will give a reading of Hoffmann’s tale to children, after which the Mouse of the Day will be randomly selected. The lucky winner will then dress up as a mouse and appear in the first act of the show.
