Opéra de Montréal presents

Another Brick In The Wall – The opera

Based on the lyrics and music of Roger Waters’ The Wall.
Operatic version composed by Julien Bilodeau.
Stage direction by Dominic Champagne.

This timeless work, presented in an operatic adaptation, seemed ideal for an approach worthy of the theme. Eight soloists, 48 chorus singers, 70 musicians, and a team of exceptional design professionals will infuse the work with a new dimension. The alienation and isolation of the central character of Pink — as well as his entire generation’s struggle with disillusionment — will find a vehicle for expression in the total art form that is opera.

The premiere of this adaptation on the Montreal stage is highly significant, as it was after a concert at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in 1977 that Roger Waters got the idea for the project. Starting out as a concept album (1979) and then a film (1982), The Wall is a psychological drama inspired by Roger Waters’ life. Through a depiction of Pink’s feelings of alienation and isolation, The Wall is representative of the difficulties of an entire generation, whose members are faced with the collapse of their dreams and the world they know.

Synopsis
Following his father’s death during World War II, and continuous abuse from his mother and teachers, Pink isolates himself from the rest of the world. The break-up of his marriage represents the last brick in the metaphorical wall he has been building for himself. If his survival depends on it, will Pink be capable of demolishing his inner wall?

Note: The pre-opera sessions will take place only for the 4 following performances: March 11, 14, 16 and 18.
