The Holy Body Tattoo + GY!BE = Monumental

Vancouver-based dance troupe The Holy Body Tattoo and Montreal post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor are re-staging their hit show, Monumental. Music and dance heroes will collide with results that are nothing short of amazing—you might even say they’re monumental.

The piece first hit the stage in 2005, which was also the last time HBT, hailed the world over for their dance prowess, was a unit. A decade later, nine of the troupe’s dancers are making a comeback with the choreographed piece by Dana Gingras and Noam Gagnon. This time, they’re backed by eight musicians from GY!BE. In monumental, the artists inhabit an urban landscape forged from lighting and projections as they perform atop plinths of varying heights. monumental is an expression of the unrelenting pace of modern society, the utter madness of present-day life. The near ghostly, introspective score by Montreal band GY!BE ties in perfectly with HBT’s message.

“[…]as a daring statement on urban culture, with its heady mix of intimacy and brutality, it’s surely one of the defining dance works of the 21st century.”  Adelaide Now
