The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God

Written and Directed by Djanet Sears

Rainey, a country doctor whose family can be traced back to the origins of Negro Creek, a 200-year-old Black community in Western Ontario, has turned from her husband, her practice, and her faith, following the death of her daughter. As  neighbours rally to uphold their dignity and the town’s rich history, her elderly father mobilizes a group of ethnically proud septuagenarian activists. Rooted in African storytelling traditions, a chorus of ancestors create the mood and settings with sensuous choreography and a soaring soundscape in this touching, humorous and ultimately triumphant journey. A cast of 22 artists, the largest on the Centaur stage in decades, lifts Sears’ tale to epic heights.
